Being The Best of Dripping Springs – Our Community Coming Together
What does it mean to be part of a community? For humans, it’s everything. In the natural world it’s known that the bigger the brain, the higher the need for social connection and interdependence. As the expression goes, there’s no such thing as a happy hermit. Our ancestors lived in interconnected clans and villages for thousands and thousands of years. Why? Because it worked. Everyone grew their talents through their work, then traded the services and goods with each other. The group profited. The group grew stronger. The cool thing about a village is that you literally knew everyone there. And you were known in return. This soothes the human brain, which strives for connection.
However, as time went on and populations grew, the villages expanded into towns, and then eventually the towns became cities. While it’s doable to know the one hundred and fifty so people in your village, it’s impossible to know all the people of your large town or city. That’s why a contest like The Best of Dripping Springs, sponsored by the Dripping Springs Century News, is so beneficial to the community. From the experiences and votes of others, we get to say who in the village might be best able to help us. Who might help you figure out your taxes and save some money? Where can you take your car when that funny noise in the engine keeps getting louder. Or where to go for the best breakfast taco? My favorite? Flores Breakfast and Lunch Taco Stand, off Highway 290. Tres yummy!
When you are assertive, you can stand up for your opinions, beliefs, and wishes in such a manner so as not to violate the rights of others. Passive people take the path of least resistance, hoping others will figure out their needs and fulfill them. Aggressive people steamroll over the rights of others via the destructive tools of manipulation, anger, and guilt.
